BASIS School Teams Dominate the 2010 Middle School Science Bowl Competition
Saturday, March 6, 2010 - Eighteen teams competed for the 2010 Middle Schoo l Science Bowl title at Arizona State University. Teams included students from
Altadena Middle School, BASIS Scottsdale, BASIS Tucson, Bogle Jr High School, Chandler Preparatory Academy, Glendale Preparatory, Madison Park School, Mesa Preparatory Academy, Sonoran Science Academy, The Tesseract School and Veritas Preparatory Academy. For what was the fourth consecutive Middle School Science Bowl, in the State of
Arizona, nearly 100 students came out to show their prowess in science and math.
The Middle School Science Bowl's Opening Ceremony was kicked off with some words from first-time speaker Armando Viteri, President and CEO of Neubloc and Science Bowl Coordinator, Shashi
Jasthi, President and CEO of Solugenix Corporation. Additionally, Anita Tarango of ASU's Student Initiatives office spoke of the educational opportunities available for middle school students.

The day-long competition started with Round Robin matches with all teams participating. The competing teams were then ranked based on their performance in these first rounds. Students played until a break for lunch. Afterward, during an elimination ceremony, some teams were eliminated from the competition and the higher ranked teams
moved up to the Double Elimination Tournament in the afternoon.
Throughout the day, teams were eliminated as the competition grew to a climax in the afternoon sessions. Students, coaches, parents and other spectators gathered in the Herberger Lecture Hall to witness the excitement of the final Science Bowl rounds. The final three teams in contention were BASIS Tucson Team Number Two, Madison Park
and BASIS Scottsdale Team Number Two.
At last, BASIS Scottsdale Team Number Two, which included Nithin Kannan, Stanley Lee, Thomas Marks, Sahar Panjwani and Adithya Rajan, and Madison Park students,
which included Jacob Browning, Kyle Chapman, Justin Hegyi, Emily Nesbitt and Ethan Pierson,
battled it out for the first place title. In the end, however, it was the BASIS Scottsdale Team that won the final match. The BASIS Scottsdale Team will move on to compete and represent Arizona at the National Science Bowl® in Washington, D.C later on this summer.
